The term Nordic mythology , Viking mythology or associated with pre-Christian religion , myths , faiths and beliefs of the Scandinavians and includes those tribes who settled in Iceland, where the written sources gathered for the mythological material . It is the best known version of the oldest common German mythology , which also includes the related Anglo-Saxon mythology . The German mythology in turn developed from an ancient Indo-European religion analogous mythological material .

Nordic mythology is a collection of beliefs and myths shared between the northern Germanic tribes and not some apocalyptic religion , in the sense that there is no claim divine inspiration in their holy texts . The mythological verbally passed the greater part of the Viking age . Our knowledge of this period is based primarily on Enda and other medieval texts written after the Christianization of the northern peoples .

In the Scandinavian tradition, the ancient faiths and maintained long-term in non-urban areas , where some traditions still survive today, especially in the movement Neopagans Azatrou and Ontinismo . In northern latitudes, the Nordic mythology is an important factor literary inspiration , theater and film production .
